New York State Regents Testing

The Regents Exams in New York are mandatory for all public-school students. The tests are available in grades 9 through 12 and, in some cases, as early as the 8th grade. Most students take Regents exams in the following subject areas:

  • Algebra I
  • Algebra II / Trigonometry
  • Geometry
  • English Language Arts
  • US History
  • Global History and Geography
  • Living Environment (Biology)
  • Earth Science
  • Physics

To obtain a NY Regents diploma, students need to complete at least four Regents exams with a score of 65 or higher. Students with IEPs have different score requirements but must still complete Regents exams. The four base exams include math, science, social studies, and English Language Arts. In addition to the written portion of exams, the four Science exams include practical lab examinations.

Students must also complete one of six Pathway options. The most common Pathway option is to take the fifth Regents exam to meet the requirement.

Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE)

If your child wishes to attend private middle or high schools, they will often be asked to complete the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE). The exam has three levels:

  • Lower Level (for students in 5th and 6th grade)
  • Middle Level (for students in 7th and 8th grade)
  • Upper Level (for students in 9th grade and above)

Although the different levels are different, the main areas of testing remain the same:

  • Mathematics Achievement
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Verbal Reasoning

In addition to the standard test, the ISEE also contains an unscored essay portion. Test administrators will forward the essay to all the schools where a student has applied.

The ISEE is offered several times each year, but students may only take the test once every six months.

Parents may also see references to other tests such as the SSAT and the SHSAT. These tests are similar to the ISEE  in terms of admissions requirements. Public schools with specialized curricula use the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT). Private schools also use the Secondary Schools Admissions Test (SSAT).

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is often (incorrectly) called the Scholastic Assessment Test. The SAT is used as an entrance exam by many universities and colleges. The test, administered by the College Board, measures a student’s general readiness for college-level coursework.

The SAT has two sections — Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing. The three-hour test is administered to high school students. Test locations will vary, but your student will have ample opportunity to participate. The SAT is part of an entire suite of assessments that some schools may request.

American College Test (ACT)

Developed in 1959, The American College Test (ACT) is more than 30 years younger than the SAT. Designed as an alternative to the SAT, which was essentially an aptitude test, the ACT sought to test more of what students learned in the classroom. Although the numbers are close, more students take the SAT.

The ACT currently has four sections — Math, English, Social Studies, and Natural Sciences. There is also an optional writing section. While the SAT takes three hours, the ACT is two hours, 55 minutes for the base test, and an extra 40 minutes added for the optional writing portion. The SAT has 154 questions, and the ACT has 215 questions.

The ACT is accepted at every college and university in the United States.

AP Test Prep

Advanced Placement courses give students the ability to work at the college level while in high school. AP courses give students a jumpstart on their college prep. Test prep tutoring for AP tests can be an integral part of a student’s success. WhizKidz Tutoring offers a wide variety of assistance in AP coursework and test prep.

General Classroom Test Prep

Testing in classrooms is an ongoing process in every school, public or private. If your student struggles with test performance or test anxiety, test prep tutoring can help.

WhizKidz tutors concentrate on teaching students how to reason rather than rote memorization. Using study aids, time management skills, and other tools, your student will learn better study habits to achieve higher test scores. Strategies are taught to help students build confidence and lessen text anxieties.

Test Prep for Midterms and Final Examinations

Midterm and final examinations can account for a large part of your student’s final grade in a class. Test prep tutoring helps students study effectively, resulting in higher test scores.

If your student has had difficulty with midterms and finals, a WhizKidz test prep tutor can help streamline their study habits to improve test performance.
